How to Enroll in Medicare
There are 3 ways to enroll in Medicare
- Online (Use the links in Government Resource section above to enroll in Medicare A &/or B)
- Call 1-800-Medicare
- Visit your local Social Security Administration Office (Use link in Government Resource section above to find the closest office to you)
Should I enroll in Medicare now or later?
Select which scenario fits you best:
- If you are turning 65, do NOT have the option of employer coverage, AND you are NOT collecting Social Security Benefits then you should enroll in Medicare Part A & Part B, 3 - 4 months before your 65th birthday.
- If you are turning 65, do NOT have the option of employer coverage AND you ARE collecting Social Security Benefits you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare. Simply watch the mail for your Medicare card to arrive 3-4 months before your 65th birthday. If you prefer to stay on an employer plan and do not need Medicare Part B you will need to formally rescind Medicare Part B upon receipt of your card.
- If you are considering staying on employer coverage after age 65 verify with your Human Resource department if they require both Medicare Part A & Part B, one of these, or neither Part A & B while on the employer group plan. Compare the employer group benefits to Medicare benefits to determine which is the best value for your needs.
- If you are over age 65 and leaving employer coverage apply for Medicare Part A & B, 2-3 months before you lose employer coverage. You will need to complete and submit Forms 40B and L564E found in the government resource section above.
I have Medicare A & B, now What?
It is time to select:
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap A-N) or a Medicare Advantage (Plan C) and
- Prescription Drug Coverage (Plan D)
The plans you select will coordinate with and fill in the coverage gaps of Medicare A & B. To determine the right plan for your needs and budget we recommend that you sit down with one of our specialists.
